The caliber is .38 S&W and just to make it clear, .38 Special is a different chambering and will not work in your revolver. It appears to be in very good condition. If nothing there, then the gun is pre '57 and the serial should be on the frame under the butt. You may have to remove the grips to see it (1 screw, very simple).
